The Professional Training Academy of Radio Film And TV, used to be under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, was founded in 1990 on the basis of the North China Technical School of Radio and TV. The academy is one of the broadcasting and television colleges found in the earlier time and it has become a practicing base to train officers for the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. The Academy enrolls from all over the country. In accordance with the reform of administration in colleges and universities, which was advocated by the State Council in September of 2000, the administration was transferred from the state department to Shanxi Province.
The academy has always persisted in the fundamental policy of “stabilizing the scale, promoting the quality, emphasizing the effect and offering characteristics” in order to promote the teaching level and develop the academy into a radio, film and TV college with distinctive characteristics. In teaching, the academy adheres to the principle of “leading moderately in theory, keeping the ability in pace with the professional level” and sticks to “the three-five pattern” in practicing and teaching in order to form such teaching characteristics as distinctive professional features, independent and comprehensive systems, scientific and flexible mechanism and spotlighted centerpiece status of the students.

The Academy locates in the Wulongkou Street in Taiyuan City. It covers an area of 305 mu and its gross area is over 100,000 square meters. ARFT has a qualified teaching staff, whose number has been 418, including 286 full-time teachers experts with special state-sponsored allowances, members from the teaching supervisory committee of Education Ministry, appraisers of national quality courses and specialists from Shanxi CPC Committee. Besides, the academy also invited over 80 famous film and TV experts as guest professors or part-time professors.

The number of the students in the campus amounts to more than 4,000, and over 1000 students from the radio, film and TV system are trained at their posts here every year. The students who graduated from the Academy has taken up occupations in CNR, CRI, CCTV, some provincial and city TV and advertisement companies, and most of them have become the backbone. During the training progress, the academy focuses on cultivating qualified talents, serving the economy of Shanxi Province and combining the education with the development of radio, film and TV, which was thought highly of by the employers and the society. In the latest 5 years, the graduates’ employment rate has always been over 90%.

The academy consists of 6 departments and 3 training bases: Video Production, Art Design, Animation, Directing & Broadcasting, Media Management, Basic Education and the centers for video production, video information and animation cartoon. The academy offers 24 specialties in all, such as TV Shooting, Video Animation, Broadcasting & Hosting, Information Network Technology of Film & TV and so on. Animation was set as national level quality specialty and has been shouldering the national co-orperation program of teaching research and producing tasks. Animation and Shooting were set as national experimental specialties of teaching reform. The specialties of Broadcasting & Hosting and Advertisement were set as provincial experimental specialties of teaching reform.

The academy has perfect teaching facilities and equipped teaching and practicing bases. Having cost nearly 60million RMB, the teaching equipments include a 400 square meters’ studio and a 300 square meters’ studio, 2D and 3D figures and non-paper cartoon laboratory, animation equipments which can satisfy the need of the CCTV and the most advanced non-liner video frequency workshop and 100sets of other equipments for photographing, recording and editing. The library’s gross area is over 9,000 square meters, in which there are nearly 450,000 books and 150,000 audiovisual data. Meanwhile, the academy also pays great attention to the building of the practicing bases and has built about 81 practicing bases in other cities and provinces. Besides, the academy has been always keeping in a close touch with the radio and TV industry and has established a strategic cooperation partnership with CCTV station and China Yellow River TV station.
